Our Hand Made and Hand Painted Papyrus Collection:

Grown in Egypt's Nile River delta region, papyrus was used from ancient times for items ranging from ship sails and cords to mats. The most extensive use of this grass was as paper for legal and personal correspondence. Although world-wide use of papyrus basically halted around the 12th century, contemporary artisans have adopted the product as a canvas for a variety of works.
The available selections range from simple renderings of Egyptian royalty to elaborate, full-color scenes from daily life in the ancient world. Among the royalty featured are queens Cleopatra, Nefertiti and Nefertari; a variety of King Tut images, Ramsess II, the Hours Eye, the Winged Maat and the Sphinx.

Papyrus's manufacturing process:

Papyrus is harvested from the banks of the Nile River. The outer skin is removed from the stalk and the inner pith of the plant is cut into long, thin strips. The fibers are broken down by pounding them, then they're soaked in water for three days. Once the pith is clear and pliable, the strips are cut to the appropriate length and laid out on sheets of cotton. The strips are then laid in two layers, one vertical and one horizontal, and placed between two hard, absorbent barriers. Many sheets are stacked on top of each other and placed in a press, where they are squeezed and laid out in the sun to dry. The barriers are replaced every eight ours, and the process continues for three or four days, until the papyri are dry.
